What Decides the Cost of Your Fence — what that involves
Footage, height and material — in that order
Length is the biggest single lever, and it is the one most people misjudge: pacing a yard is usually out by a good margin, and gates, corners and returns all count. Height is next — a six-foot fence is not simply twenty per cent more than a five-foot one, because the post depth and rail count change with it. Then the material. Cedar, treated pine and chain link are genuinely different jobs, not the same fence in different clothes.
Your ground, not your fence
Slope changes how every post is set and whether the panels step or rake. Rock and hardpan can turn a straightforward dig into the longest part of the job. Access matters more than most people expect — if a truck cannot get near the run, every post, panel and bag of concrete is carried by hand, and that is time. None of this is visible from a phone call, which is why nobody honest quotes a final number over the phone.
What is coming out, and what is going in beside it
Taking an old fence out and hauling it away is its own job, and so is working alongside a neighbour's fence that is staying. Gates are the other line item people forget: a walk gate and a double drive gate are not the same piece of work, and a gate that drags in year two is almost always a hinge and post problem that was decided on day one. Some valley cities also charge for a fence permit outright — in Sweet Home it is $25, and the city pages on this site list what each one requires.
How to compare two bids without guessing
Ask both bidders the same four questions: how deep are the posts and are they set in concrete, what hardware is used on the gates, is haul-away of the old fence included, and what happens if the line is not where either of us thinks it is. Those are the line items that usually explain a gap between two numbers, and they are the ones you notice in year three. Why will nobody quote a fence over the phone?
Because four of the six things that decide the number are about your ground rather than your fence — the slope, the rock, the access and how much old fence is coming out. A figure given before anyone has seen those is a figure that gets revised later, and a revised quote is worse than no quote. What we will do is come out and measure, free, and leave you a written number.
How soon can I have a number?
Usually within a day or two of the visit, and often on the spot. The estimate is written, it is yours whether or not you hire us, and it holds for 30 days.
