How long does a cedar fence last in Oregon?
A well-built cedar fence with properly set posts is a long-term structure; posts and ground contact are what fail first, which is why post depth and setting matter more than the boards.
Should I stain or seal it?
Cedar weathers to grey on its own and is fine untreated. Staining is a look-and-maintenance choice, not a structural one — and it is easier before the fence has weathered a season.
What is the difference between board-on-board and shadow box?
Board-on-board overlaps boards on one side so there is no gap when the wood shrinks. Shadow box alternates them front and back, so it looks finished from both sides — worth it on a shared line.
